After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as the vice president of Tongji University. In 1955, he was elected as a member (academician) of the Faculty of Technology and Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In 1957, he served as the head of the Mechanics and Architecture Discipline Group of the State Science and Technology Commission. In 1958, he served as the director of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge. During the Cultural Revolution, he was imprisoned in a cowshed for censorship.
In 1977, he was appointed President of Tongji University, and in 1978, he was appointed Chairman of Shanghai Association for Science and Technology and Vice Chairman of China Civil Engineering Society. In 1982, he was appointed Honorary President of Tongji University. In April 1983, he was elected Chairman of the Sixth Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
