2. The original text.
During the Second World War, there was a housewife in France known as Madame Bernold. She had only two young children by her side, and all three members of her family participated in the transmission of secret information in order to drive the German bandits out of their homeland.
Mrs. Bernold's task is to hide the top-secret information she has received and wait for her team to send someone to pick it up. For the sake of intelligence security, she has thought of many ways, but she has never been reassured. Eventually, she came up with the brilliant idea of hiding a small metal tube containing the information inside a half-cut candle and inserting it into a candlestick.
Because the candles were placed on the conspicuous table, they deceived the German soldiers who came to search.
One night, three German officials broke into the house. After they sat down, a lieutenant took the candle containing the information and lit it and placed it in front of the major. Mrs. Bernard knew that if the candle burned into the metal pipe, it would automatically extinguish, the secret would be exposed, the intelligence station would be destroyed, and it would also mean the end of the life of the family of three.
She looked at the two pale children and hurriedly took out an oil lamp from the kitchen and put it on the table. "Look, gentlemen, this lamp is brighter. As he spoke, he gently blew out the candle.
A crisis seems to have passed.
The relief didn't last long, and the lieutenant rekindled the smoking wick. "It's so dark at night, so it's good to have a little candle. He said.
Minutes and seconds passed. At this time, the eldest son, Jack, slowly stood up, "It's so cold. I'll go to the firewood room and bring some firewood to make a fire.
As he spoke, he stretched out his hand and picked up the candlestick and walked towards the door, and the room suddenly became much darker. The lieutenant hurried forward and shouted, "Can't you do without candles?"
As soon as he recaptured the candlestick, the child was sensible, and he knew that doom was coming. In the last moments of the struggle, he calmly carried back a bundle of firewood, lit a fire, and sat silently. The candle flame flickered, emitting a faint light, and at this moment, it seemed to be the most terrifying thing in the room.
Mrs. Bernold's heart rose to her throat, and she seemed to feel the wolf-like eyes of the Germans staring at the candles that were getting shorter and shorter.
Suddenly, in the town of Songchai, the youngest daughter Jacqueline said to the Germans in a coquettish voice: "Mr. Commander, it's getting late, it's dark upstairs, can I take a lamp and go upstairs to sleep?" The Major looked at the lovely little girl and said:
Of course. I also have a little daughter your age at home. Jacqueline calmly put up the candlestick, said goodnight to the officials, and went upstairs.
Just as she stepped up the last staircase, the candle went out.
