Wanzhou Port is located at the junction of the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River, in the hinterland of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, known as the "gateway to eastern Chongqing", and is the largest port in eastern Chongqing and the Three Gorges reservoir area after being directly governed by Chongqing. Wanzhou Port, as a large port in the reservoir area, has undergone fundamental changes in shipping conditions after the impoundment of water in the second phase of the Three Gorges Project. Due to the increase in water level, the Wuxia River section, Kuixia River section, Yunyang River section, Wanzhou River section and Zhongxian River section were raised by 70 meters, 60 meters, 40 meters, 30 meters and 10 meters respectively. Except for the Wuxia and Kuixia gorges, the river surface is not wide because the two banks are cliffs, and the width of the general water area is more than 250 meters, and the narrowest point is still 190 meters; The wide river section outside the canyon has a width of 500-1000 meters, and the widest point can reach more than 1000 meters, and the water flow conditions are significantly improved compared with the mountainous waterway, so the navigable control river section outside the canyon is withdrawn after the impoundment of the second phase of the Three Gorges Project, leaving only the three passage control river sections of Qingshi Cave, Kongwangtuo and Bellows Gorge in the canyon section, and the navigation control mileage is kilometers, which is less than that before the impoundment.

After the impoundment of the second phase of the Three Gorges Project, the narrowest part of the channel in the reservoir area is a dry ditch, which can still reach about 140 meters. Originally, the waterway could only be transported by 1,000-ton ships around the clock, and only ships below 1,000 tons could pass during the dry season, and only 3,000-ton ships could pass during the peak water season. At present, the impoundment of the second phase of the Three Gorges Project has raised the water level of the Sichuan River to 135 meters, raising the original water level by several tens of meters, and the reefs and dangerous shoals will no longer exist, and the control section of the river will also be greatly reduced.

The original turbulent water of the gorge has become as horizontal as a mirror, providing favorable conditions for ship navigation. After the Three Gorges Project was completed and impounded, its reservoir area stretched from Jiangjin and Huangjian in Chongqing to Sandouping in Yichang, Hubei, and affected 22 cities and counties in Chongqing and Hubei. The reservoir area can pass ships of 3,000 tons to 5,000 tons, and the 10,000-ton fleet can go directly to Wanzhou, and the advantages of Wanzhou Port as a perennial deep-water port are becoming increasingly prominent.
