Translation of the full text of Preface to the Poems of Yuxi .

Translation: There is a stream to the north of the irrigation area, which flows into Xiaoshui to the east. Some people say that there was a man surnamed Ran who used to live here, so he called this stream Ran Creek.

Some people say that this stream can be dyed, and it is named after its properties, so it is also called dyeing stream. I made a mistake because of my ignorance and was relegated to the bottom of the water. I love this stream, and after walking two or three miles along the stream, I found a beautiful place, and I made my home here.

In ancient times, there was a Yugong Valley, and now my home is located by this stream, and this stream has not yet been determined, and the local residents are still arguing about it, so I can't help but change its name to Ning, so I changed it to Yuxi.

At the bottom of Foolish Creek, I bought a small hill and called it Foolish Hill. Walking sixty steps northeast from Yuqiu, I found a spring, and I bought it for my own use, calling it Yuquan. There are six springs in the Foolish Spring, all of which come out of the flat ground at the foot of the mountain, and the water of the spring originally gushes upward.

When the spring water merges, it bends and winds to the south, forming a ditch, which I call the foolish ditch. And I took up earth and stones, and blocked the narrow passage of the springs, and made a pool of water, and called it the pool of fools. The hall on the east side of the pond is called the hall of foolishness.

The pavilion in the south of Yutang is called Yuting, and there is a small island in Yuchi, which is called Yudao. There are also many beautiful trees and strange stones in this area, which are arranged in a staggered manner, and these are the strange scenery of the mountains and rivers, and because of me, they are all humiliated by the word "fool".

In the Analects, it is said that the wise man is happy with water. But now the brook has been humiliated by the fools. Why?

Because its waterways are too low to irrigate farmland; It is steep and turbulent, there are many shallows and stones in the middle, the big ship cannot sail in, the location is remote and the stream is slender and shallow, and the dragon disdains it, because it cannot make clouds and rain by it. It doesn't bring benefits to the world, but it's similar to me. In this way, it is also possible to call it a foolish word.

Ning Wuzi "seems very ignorant in the country when it is not very usual", that is a smart person pretending to be confused. Yanzi "never expresses opinions that are different from those of the teacher, and looks like a fool", which is also a foolish person. Now I live in a time of peace and prosperity, but I have done things contrary to reason, so that no one who is called a fool is so foolish as I am, and because of this, no one in the world can compete with me for the water of this stream, and only I can possess it and name it.

Although this stream cannot bring benefits to the world, it is good at reflecting all things, it is beautiful and clear, it can make a sonorous sound like gold and stone, and it can make fools smile, fall in love, and be so happy that they do not want to leave. Although I am not worldly, I can comfort myself with poetry, choosing to depict all kinds of things, including all forms without avoiding them. I sang Yuxi with foolish poems, dazed and not contrary to reason, dimly my feelings and foolish brook fused together, transcending nature, into the realm of void and silence, and even forgetting my own existence in the loneliness and quiet.

Therefore, I created the "Eight Foolish Poems" and carved them on the stones by the stream.

Pond ** is the island of fools. Beautiful trees and strange rocks are jagged. These are magnificent views in the mountains and rivers, and they have been defiled with foolish words for my sake.
