What is the National Olympic Team?

The Chinese National Olympic Football Team, abbreviated as the Chinese Olympic Team, is a national selection team representing the People's Republic of China, mainly participating in football competitions in the Olympic Games and Asian Games, as well as football invitational tournaments for some other U23 national football teams. The team is managed by the Chinese Football Association and is composed mainly of young players aged 23 or under at the time of each Olympic Games, but may also include individual overage players on a temporary basis according to the rules of the tournament.

The Chinese Olympic team was founded on December 31, 1989, and its first training session was on January 1, 1990. Its predecessor was the Chinese National Football Team No. 2 (National No. 2 Team).

In 1981, the Chinese Football Association established the China Hope Team, which was renamed the Chinese National Second Team in 1983, with members under the age of 23, and the players were adjusted according to their age. On August 29, 1989, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and FIFA finally reached an agreement and announced that athletes must be under the age of 23 to participate in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. The Chinese Football Association then formed China's first Olympic football team on the basis of the Chinese national second team, and the first head coach was Xu Genbao, the former coach of the second national team.

From 1988 to 1991, the National Olympic Team, as well as the predecessor National Second Team, also participated in Group A of the National Football League.
