When Bangkok Airways' predecessor, Sahakol Air, was established in 1968 to provide air taxis services. In 1986, it changed its name to today's Bangkok Airways and became a privately owned airline that began operating scheduled flights, making it the first non-national airline in Thailand to operate domestic flights. Bangkok Airways has built its own airport in Koh Samui, which opened in 1989 and offers flights to Hong Kong, Singapore and Phuket.
Bangkok Airways officially opened its airport in Sukhothai in 1996 and in Tong Yai in March 2003 to serve passengers travelling to Koh Chang.
In 2000, Bangkok Airways expanded its business by introducing the Boeing 717, a fleet consisting of ATR-72s, DASH 8 and SCHOTT 330 in the early days, and a short period of jet aircraft Fokker F100. In 2003 Bangkok Airways decided to introduce the longer range A320, and in 2004 it accepted the first A320 to replace the Boeing 717 that was about to be returned.
Bangkok Airways plans to expand its fleet and operations with the introduction of wide-body aircraft, with the introduction of the A330, A340 or B787 in 2006 to operate long-haul routes to London, India and Japan. In December 2005, Bangkok Airways announced an order for four 258-seater A350-800s, plus two options, to be delivered in 2013.
Bangkok Airways was named Best Regional Airline in Southeast Asia in the 2006 Skytrax assessment, Four-Star Airline, Best Regional Airline in Southeast Asia and Best Regional Airline in Asia in the 2007 assessment.
The airline was founded in January 1986 as Sahakol Airlines and initially operated as domestic short-haul passenger transport.
In 1989, the company changed its name to Bangkok Airways and began regular flight operations in 1986.
At present, the main business is regular domestic passenger flights, as well as tourist routes to destinations in neighboring countries.

Thai Airways was formerly known as Thai Airways Company (TAC). In 1951, Thailand** acquired shares in three small private airlines and merged them into the national airline, Thai Airways. Since then, Thai Airways has expanded rapidly, opening a number of domestic routes, reaching deeper into the then remote and barren provinces of Thailand.
After establishing a solid foothold in Thailand, THAI decided to expand its footprint and launch a number of pilot routes to Asia. In 1960, THAI formed an alliance with Scandinavian Airlines and changed its name to Thai Airways International, while Thai Airways remained an independent company and continued to operate domestic routes in Thailand.
During the first six years, THAI only flew to 10 domestic destinations by propeller aircraft. In 1966, THAI was the first airline in Asia to switch to jet aircraft. With a modern fleet, THAI has made efforts to open up new routes, pioneering flights to Bali (December 1967) and Kathmandu (December 1968).
By 1970, THAI was carrying 500,000 passengers a year, making it the third largest airline in Asia. At this moment, Thai Airways has also decided to expand its flight territory.
In April 1971, a Thai Airways passenger plane landed in Sydney, marking the first step of THAI on intercontinental routes. The following year, we launched our first direct European route to Copenhagen. With the expansion of local business in Bangkok, THAI is also expanding in other cities.
and soon expanded to other European cities. In response to the growing demand, the Airbus A300 entered service in October 1977 and the first Boeing 747 joined the THAI fleet in October 1979.
In 1980, we launched a transpacific North American route. With the advent of the 80s, we have also diversified our development and introduced various types of supporting facilities to meet the needs of passengers in the air and on the ground. In April 1983, THAI announced a strategic partnership to open a hotel in Bangkok to further develop its business.
In May 1985, a new passenger aircraft maintenance center was inaugurated. In May of the following year, the new terminal was officially opened. In December 1987, the new headquarters in Bangkok was put into service.
The most striking change is the merger of Thai Airways International and Thai Airways to unify international and domestic routes.
