Benz was born on November 25, 1844 in Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. During his studies, he systematically studied courses such as mechanical structure, mechanical principles, engine manufacturing, and economic accounting for mechanical manufacturing.

In 1872, Benz decided to establish a cast iron and machine factory in Bentz that bears his name. And obtained the production license to manufacture four-stroke engines and two-stroke engines. Benz innovated the structure of the engine to avoid the worst hazards that were previously prone to occur.

In 1879, the first single-cylinder gas engine was invented. On January 29, 1886, Ritz finally succeeded in developing a single-cylinder gasoline engine (unlike his rival, Benz mounted the engine on a tricycle frame) and invented the first horseless tricycle (now preserved in the Munich Automobile Museum).
