Lu Dongbin, a famous Taoist immortal, of the Eight Immortals.
1. One of the five northern ancestors of the Quanzhen faction, the patriarch of the Quanzhen Dao, and the representative of the Zhong and Lu Neidan factions. The original name is Lu Yan, the word Dongbin, and the number is pure Yangzi. It is generally believed that Lu Dongbin was born on the 14th day of the fourth lunar month in the year of the Bingzi of Tang Dezong (796, that is, the twelfth year of Zhenyuan), in Zhaoxianli, Yongle County (now Yongle Town, Ruicheng County, Shanxi Province).
It is also said that he was a native of Jingzhao (now Xi'an, Shaanxi) in the late Tang Dynasty.
He was born in a family of eunuchs for generations, his ancestors were officials of the Sui and Tang dynasties, Lu Dongbin was familiar with the history of the scriptures since he was a child, and some people say that he was a jinshi in the first year of the Tang Baoli (825 AD) and became a local official.
Later, because he was tired of the chaotic times of the rebellion of the soldiers, he abandoned the fame and wealth of the world, and came to Jiufeng Mountain on Zhongtiao Mountain with his wife to practice. He and his wife each lived in a cave, which was relatively hopeful, so he changed his name to Lu Dongbin; "Lu" refers to the two of them, and the two are Lu; "Cave", is a cave for dwelling; "Bin", that is, to tell people that they are guests in the cave. His Taoist name is Pure Yoko.
Before he abandoned his official position and ran away, he gave away his family property to the poor, and did many good things for the people.
Lu Dongbin was kind and charitable all his life, helping the needy, and won the admiration of the people. After his death, the people of his hometown built the "Lu Gong Ancestral Hall" for him to commemorate. In the Jin Dynasty, because Lu Dongbin believed in Taoism, he changed the "ancestral hall" to "view".
In the early years of the Yuan Dynasty, Kublai Khan knew that the Taoism that Lü Dongbin believed in was quite popular among the masses, so he wanted to use religion and Lü Dongbin's prestige to consolidate his rule. From the construction of the main hall to the completion of the murals of several halls, it lasted 110 years, almost the entire Yuan Dynasty.
There is a paragraph of "Lu Yan's self-description" in the Tongzhi Huangzhou Mansion Chronicles, which says: "I am a Tang Dynasty clan, surnamed Li Mingqiong, the word Boyu, after marrying the Jin family, I raised four children and lived a happy life. I have eyebrows, broad eyes, a shrugged nose, a slender face, and bushy sideburns, and I don't have much of a samurai appearance, but I really look like a scholar.
There is a mole at the root of my mountain, which belongs to my wife; There is also a mole on the temple, which is grammatical. I can meet immortals and become immortals, not comparable to ordinary people. When I was 50 years old, I was able to write good articles, and then I started to become an official.
Soon the Huangchao soldiers rose, the country suffered a disaster, and the family was in misfortune, so I had to abandon my four children, take my wife Jin, and choose a cave to live in. Why did I change my surname to Lu? Because, at that time, the four children were gone, and my wife and I were the only two people left in the family, so the two of them merged into Lu and changed their surname.
We live in the mountains, hence our name Rock; We are often in the cave, and we are guests in the stone cave, so we are called Dongbin; My wife later died, and I was the only man left, so I was also called Chunyangzi. Lu Dongbin's rather romantic "self-description", let's take it as a way to understand Lu Dongbin's person.
Lu Dongbin was originally an ordinary character with little name, but in the long-term folk circulation, it is like the rolling of a snowball, and the story is becoming richer and richer, becoming a legendary figure in the style of arrows.
