Gas discharge lamps have a high starting voltage and a low discharge maintenance voltage. When the lamp is started by high voltage, the voltage drops, the current increases, if not limited, the lamp current will continue to increase until the lamp burns out, so it is necessary to connect a ballast that matches the type and specification of the lamp in series in the lighting circuit of the discharge lamp to provide a high starting voltage that makes the lamp start, and limit the lamp current to stabilize it within the specified range.
The process of the workpiece is as follows: after the light is turned on, the ballast, the lamp, and the starter (which are connected in series in the lamp filament circuit) are connected in series to form a loop, and the neon bubble in the light is lit and heated, so that the bimetal sheet in it is bent and the neon bubble is short-circuited; Power Supply Ballast The current reaches its maximum value in the circuit formed by the filament. At the same time, after the neon bubble is short-circuited, the bimetal sheet is cooled and reset and disconnected, so that the current is interrupted.
Because the back EMF generated in the inductor is superimposed with the power supply and added to both ends of the lamp, the high voltage causes the gas in the lamp to break down and ignite, and the current at both ends of the lamp increases greatly and the voltage drops. At this time, the current is limited by the inductance connected in series in the circuit, so it is named "ballast".

This generates a high self-inductance voltage, which makes the lamp start up quickly.

1. General fluorescent lamps must have ballasts, and they cannot be used if they are not.
If it is an LED fluorescent lamp, it can be installed without ballast.
2. The difference between ballast, rectifier and starter:
1) The ballast is used to convert the AC220V voltage to the voltage required for the fluorescent lamp. Ballasts were invented to improve lighting quality and lighting energy efficiency, and are divided into inductive and electronic. Among them, the main structure of the inductive ballast is a coil and an iron core, which is often used as the starting point of the fluorescent lamp and the impedance during stable operation, which has an energy-saving effect.
2) Rectifier is a device that converts alternating current into direct current, input alternating current and output direct current (but may still fluctuate to a certain extent), and is widely used in home appliances and various chargers.
3) Starter, that is, starter. It's the little cylindrical thing plugged in next to the fluorescent lamp. The starter is used to instantaneously disconnect in the fluorescent lamp circuit to induce electromotive force in the circuit, so that the first light has a large enough voltage to excite the lamp to shine.

1. Only gas discharge lamps with negative electric companion resistance, such as fluorescent lamps, sodium lamps, mercury lamps, etc., need to use ballasts. The ballasts provide high voltage triggering and current limiting. LED lamps are low-voltage DC powered and do not require high-voltage triggering, so there is no need for an inductive element to act as a ballast.
Of course, the LED lamp beads cannot be directly connected to the ordinary grip AC mains, and a special power supply is required to complete the functions of step-down, rectification and current limiting.
Second, LED comes with a constant current source, no need for ballast, starter. Generally, the lamps above T8 can be installed in the lamps because the lamp space is large enough, and the constant current source section can be installed in the lamp. Therefore, during installation, you can remove the rectifier and starter in the original bracket and install the lamp directly.
The T5 and T4LED fluorescent lamps are very small because the lamp tube is very small, and the constant current source can only be installed in the bracket, so the general manufacturer will configure the bracket when making T4 T5, and the bracket is equipped with a constant current source, and the lamp is directional when installed. The direction is reversed, and the light tube is not on. We are looking at adding some conversion circuitry so that the lamp will work even if the lamp is reversed.

Fluorescent lamps must have ballasts, and they cannot be used without them. But if it is an LED fluorescent lamp, it can be installed without ballast.
