    On 7 September 2001, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution deciding that the International Day of Peace would be celebrated on 21 September, beginning in 2002. The resolution states: "Declares that the International Day of Peace shall henceforth become a global day of ceasefire and non-violence, and invites all States and peoples to cease hostilities on this day."

    Resolution 55 282 also invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, regional and non-** organizations, and individuals to celebrate the International Day of Peace in all appropriate ways, including education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations to achieve a global ceasefire.

    History

    In 1981, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating the opening day of the General Assembly on the third Tuesday of September as the International Day of Peace.

    In March 1997, Mr. Sun Naifang, a Chinese Mr. Zhong Wensan, proposed to the UN Security Council the idea of a "World Cessation of War Week", in which Chong Chun advocated that "all war-torn countries and regions should unconditionally cease war during the cessation of war" and "provide an opportunity for the war-torn areas to think about truce, provide an opportunity to ease contradictions, and effectively promote world peace" (according to the World Celebrity and Peace Daily, March 18, 1997).

    On 7 September 2001, the General Assembly adopted resolution 55,282, in which it decided to designate 21 September of each year as the International Day of Peace, beginning in 2002. The General Assembly proclaimed the International Day of Peace a global day of ceasefire and non-violence and called upon all States and peoples to cease hostilities on that day.
