Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands, the eldest son of a clergyman's family, and grew up in the countryside. As a child, Van Gogh, according to his sister, felt strange not only to his younger siblings, but also to himself. When he grew up, Van Gogh worked as a painting middleman and a priest, but it didn't go well, and at the suggestion of his younger brother Theo, he picked up the brush.
Van Gogh only began painting at the age of 27, and in just ten years, he painted more than 800 paintings and the same number of drawings, but during his lifetime he sold only one painting, and was so poor that he had to rely on his brother Theo for financial and moral support for a long time. At the age of 33, Van Gogh traveled to Paris and met Gauguin, and the two became friends. But the personalities of Van Gogh and Gauguin are too different, in a fierce quarrel, Van Gogh was originally mentally ill, coupled with emotional control, and finally staged the famous "Van Gogh ear cutting" incident in art history.
Van Gogh later entered a psychiatric hospital and finally died of a hypochondriac attack. He was uncontrollably suicidal. He went to the wheat fields that often became his landscapes, shot himself with a shot, but did not die immediately, and died after a day of struggle.
A year after Van Gogh's death, Theo also died. The tombs of the two are buried together. Van Gogh worked hard all his life, and after his death, his talent was discovered, and he finally became famous all over the world.

Born into a family of Protestant clergymen in the Dutch countryside, Van Gogh worked as a clerk and trading broker in his early years, as well as as a missionary in the mines. He was full of fantasies and extremes, and after many setbacks and failures in life, he finally devoted himself to painting, determined to "fight against himself in painting". In his early years, he was influenced by traditional Dutch painting and French realism.
In 1886, he came to Paris, where he became acquainted with Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painters and came into contact with the works of Japanese ukiyo-e. The expansion of his field of vision has changed his painting style dramatically, and his paintings have begun to change from dull and dim in the early days to simple, bright and intensely colored. By the time he arrived in Arles, a small town in the south of France in 1888, he had already shaken off the influence of Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, and had gone against it.
In Arles, Van Gogh wanted to organize a society of painters. In 1888, Gauguin was invited to visit, but due to the conflict of personalities and differences of ideas between the two men, the cooperation soon failed. After that, Van Gogh suffered from frequent episodes of madness (some have recorded it as "epilepsy"), but he continued to paint even when he was conscious.
In July 1890, he shot himself in a state of insanity at the age of 37.
An excitable and neurotic artist, he left behind a number of striking masterpieces in his short life. His art is an expression of the soul. He once said:
I don't seek to be accurate in painting, I want to express myself more powerfully", he does not focus on the representation of objective objects, but on the expression of feelings about things.
Henri Fausillon said of Van Gogh: "He was the most passionate and lyrical painter of his time. ......For him, everything has expression, urgency, and appeal.
There is a striking poetry in all forms, in all countenances", and "he feels that there is a mysterious sublimation in the life of nature, and he wants to capture it."
All this meant to him a fanatical and sweet enigma, and he hoped that his art would convey to humanity its all-engulfing passion" (Ovsharov, ed., Van Gogh, Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House, 1987, p. 95).

His creative psychology and perception have always been a puzzle in the study of the Impressionist painting style. Van Gogh's letters, which will be made public for the first time in New York, may help demystify the mystery. >>>More
