What is EWSD? What does EWS mean

EWSD (Electronic Global Digital Exchange System, or, in German, Elektronisches WaehlSystem [Digital]) is a widely installed switching system developed by Siemens. According to Siemens, EWSD has completed the exchange of more than 16 million lines in more than 100 countries. EWSD is a modular system in which some switches can be installed in the center of a company's equipment and others can be installed on the user side.

Some of the key features of EWSD include the following: Advanced Intelligent Networking (AIIN) and Performance6 allow switching services to be attached to service control points, i.e. new services can be attached and executed by the switching system without requiring the customer to purchase the new equipment. In addition to advanced intelligent network performance, EWSD provides ISDN, Class, SS7 and central services.

Digital and analog lines can be combined in the same line set, allowing digital and analog signals to work in full synergy. Carriers using EWSD can provide an automatic call distributor service to customers who do not have a call center. EWSD also provides Bellcore AIN and Global Mobile Communications System communications for personal communication services.

Linetype support includes single or duplex analog, coin, TR08, and ISDN basic rate interfaces. Support for one-way digital subscriber lines has been planned. Any linetype can be attached by simply swapping line cards.
