The body is like a Bodhi tree, the heart is like a mirror, always wipe diligently, so as not to cause dust.

Bodhi has no tree, the mirror is not a platform, there is nothing originally, where is the dust?

Many people know these two Buddhist verses, the former was written by Shenxiu, and the latter was written by the sixth ancestor Huineng, and these two poems are also the basis for the five ancestors to decide who will inherit the mantle. The former was written by Shenxiu first, and everyone praised it, and the five ancestors smiled after seeing it; The next day, Huineng wrote the latter, and everyone was very puzzled, and the five ancestors immediately wiped it off the wall after seeing it, for fear that someone would harm Huineng, which shows that the five ancestors have a mind, and finally Huineng inherits the mantle.

These two poems, simply put, depict two realms, the former is before enlightenment, that is, "gradual enlightenment", and the latter is after enlightenment, that is, the moment of "epiphany". So did the five ancestors think that Hui Neng wrote better than Shen Xiu, so they passed on the throne to Hui Neng? Many people think so, thinking that Huineng writes more profoundly than Shenxiu, and it is true, if you want to inherit the mantle, you must cultivate to a certain level, or even have enlightenment, and Huineng is such a candidate.

So can we use this to deny Master Shenxiu's son? A large number of people who study Zen or have a certain amount of thoughts about it subconsciously deny Shenxiu's words, believing that the latter is the highest state, and in practice, they pay more attention to the latter's enlightenment, which is indeed a very good method, but there are many people who are lazy in their practice and do a little bit of diligence and feel very tired, so they use the second poem to comfort themselves, which is a kind of self-deception.

In fact, Shenxiu and Huineng happened to teach us a lesson in enlightenment, first with Shenxiu's penance and diligent cultivation after a long period of accumulation, constantly eliminating karma, cutting off troubles, and increasing wisdom, and finally there was the realm of Huineng's second poem, and those who put the cart before the horse, obviously will not get results. Therefore, there is no need to separate "gradual enlightenment" from "epiphany", because they are originally unified and integrated, gradual enlightenment is the accumulation of quantity, and epiphany is a qualitative leap, both of which are indispensable. Buddhism talks about the six paramitas, and among them is the diligent paramita, and every enlightened practitioner has mostly achieved enlightenment through diligent tantra, and they never say to themselves, "I do these are 'bodhi without trees', there is no need to do this", because they don't have the capital to say this, and what they say is only superficial words, not real enlightenment.

If all the monks thought like this, what would they do in the morning and evening? What sutra to recite? What kind of meditation to sit on?

Isn't it all in vain? Obviously not right.

Master Danxia can burn the Buddha statue as firewood without any karma, but we can't, because he has already realized the Tao and will not have the heart to move, burning the Buddha statue is the same as burning wood, we burn it is "out of the Buddha's body and blood", and fall into hell, because we are ordinary wisdom. There are countless such examples, and one of the purposes of recording them is to warn future generations not to be opportunistic and self-deceiving, but to be down-to-earth and follow the path of the Buddha's practice, so that the asceticism of the body can be saved, and the experience and sweeping of one's own nature cannot be avoided.

Walking is also Zen, sitting is also Zen, silent movement and static body are peaceful, practicing in life, living in practice.

Bodhi has no tree, the mirror is not a platform, there is nothing originally, where is the dust?

This verse is from the Six Ancestors Altar Sutra, the first paragraph! Huineng went to see the Five Ancestors and Ren Master to seek the Dharma. The Five Patriarchs ordered their disciples to write a poem to see if they were enlightened.

If someone's son is well written, truly enlightened, and worthy of the Dharma instrument, then pass on the ancestral throne to him. Master Shenxiu was under the throne of the five ancestors at that time and was a professor. Write a note on the wall:

The body is a bodhisattva tree, the heart is like a mirror platform, always wipe diligently, don't make dust! After Hui Neng saw it, he also made people ** side: "Bodhi has no tree, the mirror is not a platform, there is nothing originally, where can it cause dirt?"

The five ancestors then secretly passed on the Fa, and Fu Mantle and Hui Neng were the sixth ancestors!

The meaning of this poem is: Bodhi is formless and formless, and if you still cling to a Bodhi tree, you still have no phase. Bodhi is the enlightenment of the mind, not the body.

The same is true of the mind, which is formless and formless, but it can give birth to a universal magic method. The mind is manifested in all realms, all phases, and all laws, and it cannot be fixed with a certain image. The true Buddha-nature mind does not set up any thought to cling to, does not establish any purity and one stain, destroys one life, increases and decreases, and ...... one goes and one comes.

Therefore, not clinging to the mind is a mirror, which is the opposing mind, the discriminating mind, and the give-and-take mind. The heart is pure and empty, which means that it is not stained by a law, where does the dust come from? Why try?

The realm of this poem is the realm of an enlightened person, Bodhi is formless and formless, and the mind is also formless and formless, originally all the laws are illusory, there is nothing real, what to talk about not causing dust?

The body is a Bodhi tree, and the heart is a mirror platform.

Always wipe diligently, don't make dust.

    — Monk Shenxiu.

Bodhi has no tree, the mirror is not a platform, there is nothing originally, where is the dust?

    —Monk Huineng.

Under the Bodhi tree, the prince turned the Buddha into a Buddha, and said that there is no tree, and he sewed your dog's mouth.

    —You, Lord Yama.

Monk Huineng is still respectable, damn it, the living ghost who wrote the altar scripture for him and cheated money].

From the point of view of Dunlun, we beginners should practice as Master Shenxiu said, and in the ultimate sense, we should understand (rationally) like the six ancestors

But they don't want to contradict each other, because these two verses are two sides of the same coin, one is reality and the other is emptiness, one is not two.

As practitioners, we should pay attention to our root nature and not practice the Dharma of the upper root nature, otherwise we will easily fall into the demonic path without knowing it.

Thinking of emptiness is not empty, feeling emptiness and vacuum, speaking without consciousness, and the heart and action are empty! True emptiness is not imaginary, it is also beyond all physical and mental experiences and insights, of course you have not experienced it, and if you experience it, you will become a Buddha! Therefore, Shenxiu is the practice, and the six ancestors are the goal, so don't be deceived by emptiness, your emptiness is imagined by the sixth consciousness, there is birth and death, see the vacuum, you have to reach the four meditations, breathing, heartbeat has stopped!

Of course, you have to know a lot of Dharma first!

The preceding poem is a practical practice. The post-poem is the wisdom of emptiness.

We have to do the pre-poem. It is also necessary to do the post-poem. Indispensable.

If you only have the wisdom of emptiness and don't actually practice, you can't achieve anything.

So both of these poems are necessary paths to practice. Indispensable.

There is no Amitabha Buddha in the south. I wish you all good luck.

Personally, I simply understand that Master Shenxiu means cultivating the mind with things, and the mind is not attached to the realm, and the Six Ancestors are the verses of the source of the Fa, and everything is empty. Personal understanding is for informational purposes only, thank you.

Here is the introduction of "Reciting the Seven Buddhas and Spreading the Dharma and Enlightenment". In the past, the seven Buddhas all condensed the best Dharma that they had preached throughout their lives into one and passed it on to future generations.

If you recite it every day, you should open up the Buddha's knowledge, destroy immeasurable sins, generate immeasurable merits, and directly prove the supreme Bodhi.

The seven Buddhas preached the Dharma, all of which broke the delusions of the body and mind. Liang takes sentient beings, comes from the beginningless, loses his distortion, and vainly believes that the four major beings are the body, and the six dusts are the heart. It has been lost, it has become a thing, and it has been recognized.

The body of the law is really wise, and the body is round and bright. The so-called emptiness of the body and mind is inherently empty.
