Chu. chǔ cí]
The first collection of romantic poetry in China.
Chu Ci is China's first collection of romantic poetry and essays. The name of "Chu Ci" was already in the early days of the Western Han Dynasty, and it was collected by Liu Xiangnai. Wang Yi of the Eastern Han Dynasty wrote chapters and sentences.
Qu Yuan, Song Yu, and Huainan Xiaoshan, Dongfang Shuo, Wang Bao, Liu Xiang and others in the Han Dynasty, a total of 16 articles were written. Later, Wang Yi added his own work "Nine Thoughts", which became 17 articles. The whole book is mainly based on Qu Yuan's works, and the rest of the articles are also in the form of Qu Fu.
Because of its use of the literary style, dialect rhyme and customs and products of Chu (note: that is, the western part of Hunan, Hubei, and Anhui), it has a strong local color, so it is called "Chu Ci".
Chu Ci has gone through the process of Qu Yuan's works, Qu Yuan's imitation, collection in the early Han Dynasty, and Liu Xiang's collection. It was written between 26 and 6 B.C. Liu Xiang's original book of "Chu Ci" died early, and later generations can only indirectly trace and speculate on the original appearance through Wang Yi's "Chu Ci Chapters and Sentences" (the original book is also lost) of the Eastern Han Dynasty, which is considered to be the most complete, and Song Hongxingzu's "Chu Ci Supplement" (a supplement to "Chu Ci Chapters and Sentences").
As a collection of poems with the most far-reaching influence on Chinese literature after the Book of Songs, Chu Ci has unusual significance for the entire Chinese cultural system, especially in literature, it created the poems of Chinese romantic literature, so that later generations called this style of writing "Chu Ci style" and "Sao style". The four major genres of poetry, **, prose, and drama all exist to varying degrees.
The discipline of the study of Chu Ci (Chu Ci) and its research history is now called "Chu Ci Studies". It lasted until the Han Dynasty and the Song Dynasty, and in modern times, it has become the hall of Chinese classical culture. As early as the Tang Dynasty, the "Ci of Chu" flowed into the "Confucian-Chinese cultural circle" such as Japan, and after the 16th century, it flowed into Europe; By the 19th century, it attracted wide attention in Europe and the United States, and a large number of translations and research works appeared in various languages.
In the international sinology community, Chu Ci has always been one of the research hotspots.
