Astragalus and Hongqi are not the same medicine. First of all, it is different, Astragalus and Hongqi are plants of different genera in the same family. Astragalus, also known as Astragalus, is the dried root of the leguminous plant Astragalus mongolica or Astragalus membranaceus.
And Hongqi, also known as Hongpiran, ** is the dried root of the leguminous plant Polymorphic Astragalus. The second is that the appearance traits are different.
The difference in appearance traits is mainly manifested in the color of the root outer skin, the outer surface of Astragalus membranaceus is light brownish yellow or light tan, while the outer surface of Astragalus is grayish-reddish-brown. The second is that the origin is different. There are many main producing areas of Astragalus, such as Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Gansu, Hebei, etc., while Astragalus is only mainly produced in Gansu.
Because of the above differences, the "Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China" (reference 2010 edition) includes it as two kinds of medicinal materials, namely astragalus and red membranaceus.
However, they can be used equally in clinical applications. The Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China records that the efficacy and indications of Astragalus and Hongqi are exactly the same, both have the effects of replenishing qi and raising yang, fixing the surface and stopping perspiration, diluting water and reducing swelling, nourishing blood and nourishing blood, stagnation and paralysis, supporting toxin and draining pus, and collecting sores and muscles. It can be used for qi deficiency and weakness, lack of food and loose stools, sagging of middle qi, long-term diarrhea and prolapse of the anus, blood leakage in the stool, self-sweating, qi deficiency and edema, internal heat and thirst, blood deficiency and chlorosis, hemiplegia, paralysis and numbness, carbuncle and ulcers, long-term ulceration and other symptoms.
Historically, red membranaceus has also been used as another commodity specification of astragalus, which is used together. However, due to the limited origin of red membranaceus, the yield is relatively scarce, so it is more expensive than astragalus, and its use is not as common as astragalus. Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and some parts of Southeast Asia still have the habit of medicinal red membranaceus, and consider red membranaceus to be an excellent variety of astragalus.

1. Appearance color.
Hongqi has a ruddy color, mild nature and sweet taste.
Astragalus membranaceus, yellow and white in color, sweet in taste.
2. The medicinal use is different.
Hongqi has obvious effects of replenishing qi and raising yang, and the effects of antiperspiration, sore typesetting, diuresis and swelling are common with Astragalus since ancient times, but its original plant is different from Astragalus in the same family.
Astragalus membranaceus has the effect of raising yang, fixing the surface and stopping perspiration, draining pus and muscle, diluting water and reducing swelling, and stabilizing the fetus and benefiting blood.
However, people with symptoms such as cold and fever, chest and abdomen tightness should not take astragalus; Pregnant women should not use it in large quantities for a long time.
3. Origin. Generally speaking, Astragalus is produced in Northeast China, North China and Northwest China, and Ningxia has a suitable climate and fertile land, which is known as the "hometown of Astragalus" and a thousand-year-old medicine town.
4. Raw materials. Good astragalus, each piece of astragalus has a calendula pot chrysanthemum heart, which has not been smoked with sulfur.
5. Workmanship. Generally speaking, the astragalus strip is obliquely cut at an angle of 45 degrees, the medicinal effect is more soluble in water, and the color of good astragalus is fresh, the texture is clear, and the cutting surface is firm.

Astragalus refers to the astragalus that grows in the north and is a type of astragalus. Astragalus in turn divides into Astragalus membranaceus, which is the best variety of Astragalus.

Hongqi is the dry root of the leguminous plant Polymorphic Astragalus, also known as "Chuanqi"; Moreover, due to the different origins of Hongqi, it can be divided into four kinds, in addition to the multi-sequence rock Astragalus, there are also Xikangyan Astragalus in the north, Taibaiyan Astragalus, Shanxi Rock Astragalus, and the multi-sequence rock Astragalus produced in Gansu is the mainstream variety of Hongqi, with the best quality and the longest application.
Astragalus is the root of the leguminous plant Astragalus mongolica or Astragalus membranaceus, and the quality of Astragalus mongolica is better.
2. The appearance is different
The taproot of Astragalus membranaceus is thick and long, the surface of the outer skin is gray-reddish-brown, the cork skin of Astragalus is easy to fall off, often exposing the pale yellow skin and fiber, the section is fibrous, light in color, and rich in powder.
The surface of Astragalus is light yellowish brown or light tan, hard and tough, with obvious wrinkles, and the cross-sectional color is yellowish and white, with powder.
3. Different chemical compositions
The chemical components of Hongqi are mainly flavonoids and analogues, Hongqi polysaccharides, -sitosterol, organic acids and many active substances containing 18 kinds of amino acids and 21 kinds of trace elements.
The chemical components of astragalus are mainly flavonoids, saponins, astragalus polysaccharides, and also contain amino acids and trace elements.
Astragalus is Astragalus because Astragalus is yellow.
Astragalus, that is, Northeast Astragalus, also known as Astragalus membranaceus, is known as Astragalus membranaceus because it is abundant in northern China, and is mainly produced in counties in Changbai Mountain District, Jilin Province. Astragalus is a perennial herbaceous plant of the legume family, with a deep and long rod-shaped taproot; Stems erect, multi-branched in the upper part; singular pinnate compound leaves, leaflets ovate to lanceolate, stems and leaves pubescent; racemes opposite, with pale yellow butterfly-shaped florets; The pod is membranous, flowering in July-August and fruiting in August-September.
