Zhang Zuan has been engaged in the teaching of calligraphy for more than 50 years, and has personally experienced the preparation, start, and development of the calligraphy major to today's vigorous growth, witnessed all stages of the construction of calligraphy, a traditional art discipline, participated in all levels of teaching, and has rich experience and remarkable achievements in calligraphy education. After half a century of perseverance, he is still practicing and cultivating in today's teaching arena, and can be called a pioneer, practitioner and leader of China's higher calligraphy education. He is also an outstanding scholar-type calligrapher in the contemporary calligraphy world, with a comprehensive cultivation of Chinese culture, and has attainments in the fields of traditional literature, history and philosophy.
His calligraphy practice is extraordinary, not only in the theory of calligraphy to create a new theory, leading the development direction of calligraphy creation, but also rooted in tradition, pure skills, rich in change, profound meaning, diverse styles, can closely combine theory and practice, reshape the aesthetic style of classical calligraphy, to create a unique, upright, muddy, heavy and ancient calligraphy style, has the past and the future of academic and artistic value.
Zhang Zu'an is a strange person in the art world, he has practiced martial arts since he was a child, but he has been obscure, living in a simple place, and in calligraphy, he calls himself "sixty and standing", and is praised as the three strange by Mr. Xu Jiang, president of the China Academy of Art. the second strange, the art of calligraphy is wonderful; The third is strange, and the wind and bones are strange. His study number "Buddha and Demon Dwelling" is taken from the Zen classic "Linji Lu" of the "Buddha and Demon Body" theory, critics believe that this is not only a kind of love and hatred, the extraordinary spirit of Taoism, but also implies the extreme contradiction and unity in art, is hidden in the huge tension and momentum under the high balance, is in the extremely dangerous situation of complete harmony. Zhang Zu'an's calligraphy pursues the realm of "clear, thick, strange and ancient", and is good at seeking wonders in the midst of danger, and the extremes of wonders tend to be muddy.
His recent calligraphy is strange and stubborn, the pen is powerful, sometimes bent and twisted, the lines are spicy, sometimes the majesty of the grace, but the tension is inside, sometimes it is solemn and harmonious, and there is no way to change, just like the ancient Greek sculpture "Laocoon", in the extreme strength and pain to obtain a strong and serene beauty, so as to enter the ultimate of a calligraphy aesthetics.
