The major achievements of historiography during the Sui and Tang dynasties are mainly manifested in the following three aspects:
1. The establishment of the official history book system. During the reign of Emperor Wen of Sui, an edict forbade private compilation of national history. During the time of Tang Taizong, the history museum was placed in the ban, and it was supervised by the prime minister.
Since then, the author Lang Shi has resigned from his post in history, and has achieved an important reform in the compilation system of ancient Chinese history books, which has had a major impact on the system of historical revision in later generations.
2. The emergence of a large number of historical books. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, there are as many as 9 official historical works in the style of chronicles, among which the Tang Dynasty has completed eight books, including "Book of Jin", "Book of Liang", "Book of Chen", "Book of Northern Qi", "Book of Zhou", "Book of Sui", "History of the South" and "History of the North", which are the "Eight History of the Tang Dynasty". Five generations later, the Jin Dynasty was completed, and there was the "Old Tang Book".
It accounts for more than one-third of the total 24 histories.
3. The production of two new works of historiography. The first is "Stone" written by Liu Zhiji, a famous historian in the Tang Dynasty. In this book, he not only profoundly analyzed and summarized the advantages and disadvantages of the genre of chronicle and chronicle history books, and put forward his own propositions and views on the revision of history, but also pointed out that historians must have talent, learning, and knowledge in order to write good historical books, which played a great role in promoting the development of historiography in later generations.
The other is the "General Dictionary" compiled by the Tang Dynasty historian Du You. This book is the first general history work of our country to record the code system, a total of 200 volumes, a total of food and goods, elections, officials, rites, music, soldiers, criminals, states and counties, border defense and other 9 categories, from the legendary era of the Yellow Emperor to the Tang Dynasty in the period of each code system are traced back to the source, the record is detailed, has important historical value.
