This poem was composed in 1842 when he passed through Xi'an, Shaanxi Province to bid farewell to his family. Creative background: Lin Zexu made meritorious contributions to the British resistance, but was framed by the surrender faction, dismissed by Emperor Daoguang, and sent to Ili to atone for his crimes. He endured humiliation and was sent to Yili, Xinjiang, in the 21st year of Daoguang (July 14, 1841).
