Ji Xianlin (1911- ).
Professor of Peking University, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Chinese linguist, literary translator, Sanskrit and Pali expert.
A native of Qingping (now Linqing) County, Shandong. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1956. In 1930, he was admitted to the Department of Western Languages of Tsinghua University in Beijing.
After graduating in 1934, he taught at Shandong Provincial High School in Jinan. In 1935, he was admitted to Tsinghua University as an exchange graduate student, went to Germany to study, and studied Sanskrit, Pali, Tocharian and other ancient languages at the University of Göttingen. He received his doctorate in philosophy in 1941.
He returned to China in 1946 and served as a professor at Peking University, professor and head of the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he successively served as a member of the Chinese Character Reform Committee, a member of the Academic Degree Committee Chinese and the head of the Foreign Language and Literature Evaluation Group, the president of the second Chinese Chinese Language Society, the president of the Chinese Foreign Language Teaching and Research Association, a member of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an executive director of the Chinese History Society, a director of the Chinese Writers Association, a vice president of the Chinese Foreign Literature Society, the president of the China South Asia Society, the president of the Dunhuang and Turpan Society of China, the honorary president of the Chinese Ethnic Ancient Characters Research Association, and a professor of the Department of Oriental Language and Literature of Peking University. He has made important contributions to the study of Indian linguistic morphology, primitive Buddhist language, Tocharian semantics, and Sanskrit literature. In terms of the morphology of Indian medieval languages, he comprehensively and systematically summarized the morphological characteristics of mixed Sanskrit verbs used in the Great Events and Verses of Theravada Buddhism in the popular branch of Theravada Buddhism, and wrote the article "Conjugation of Qualified Verbs in the Great Events" (1941). In terms of the linguistic question of primitive Buddhism, it is indisputable that the existence of the primitive Buddhist scriptures is spoken, and the language used is the ancient semi-Magadha dialect of medieval eastern India.
