Former Prime Minister of Australia Robert James Leehawke
Born on 9 December 1929 in Bothon, South Australia. Graduated from the University of Western Australia and the University of Oxford, UK. He joined the Labour Party in 1947.
In 1956, he engaged in academic research at the Australian National University. He was a Fellow and Solicitor of the Australian Council of Trade Unions from 1958 to 1969 and Chairman of the Council of Australian Trade Unions from 1970 to 1980. Member of the Labour Federal Executive Committee since 1971.
From 1971 to 1973, he was Deputy Chairman of the Australian Labor Party. He was Chairman of the Labour Party from 1973 to 1978 and Leader of the Labour Party since 1983. From 1973 to 1983, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of Australia.
He is also a member of the Governing Body of the International Labour Office. In November 1978, he was the head of the Australian Labor Party delegation to the International Congress of the Socialist Party. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in October 1980 and was spokesperson for Industrial Relations, Employment and Youth in the Labour Party parliamentary group in November.
He served as Prime Minister from 1983 to December 1991. At the end of February 2001, he was elected chairman of the Boao Forum for Asia.
Mr. Hawke (former Prime Minister of Australia) was born on 9 December 1929 in Bodton, South Australia. He attended Perth Modern School and the University of Western Australia, where he obtained degrees in law and economics. He was a 1953 Rhodes Scholar at the University of Western Australia.
Between 1953 and 1955, Mr. Hawke studied at the University of Oxford, England, where he obtained a bachelor's degree.
Mr Hawke returned to Australia in 1953 to pursue academic research at the Australian National University and in 1958 he was a Fellow and Solicitor of the Australian Council of Trade Unions. From 1970 to 1980, he was Chairman of the Australian Council of Trade Unions.
Mr Hawke joined the Labour Party in 1947 and was Chairman of the Party from 1973 to 1978.
He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in October 1980 and has been leader of the Labour Party since 1983. His Labour Party won in March 1983. Mr Hawke was re-elected as Prime Minister for four consecutive terms, making him the longest-serving Prime Minister in Australia's history.
Mr. Hawke stepped down from his post as Prime Minister in December 1991 and resigned from his position in Parliament in February 1992.
Mr Hawke is an Honorary Scholar at the University of Oxford and received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of South Australia. He was awarded honorary doctorates by Nanjing University, the University of Jerusalem, the University of New South Wales and the University of South Australia in China. From 1992 to 1995 he was an Associate Professor in the School of Pacific Studies and Social Sciences at the Australian National University, and from 1992 to 1997 he was an Honorary Visiting Professor in Industrial Relations at the University of Sydney.
