Ji Xianlin (1911) was an orientalist scholar, an expert in Indian language and literature, a translator and essayist. A native of Qingping, Shandong (now Linqing City). In 1930, he was admitted to the Department of Western Literature of Tsinghua University, where he studied English, German and French languages and literature.
In 1935, he was admitted to Tsinghua University as an exchange graduate student with Germany. He studied Sanskrit, Pali, Tocharian at the University of Göttingen, etc. He received his doctorate in philosophy in 1941.
He returned to China in 1946 and was appointed professor and head of the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures at Peking University. He has served as the Director of the Institute of South Asian Studies and the Vice President of Peking University. For many years, he has devoted himself to the research and pioneering work of Oriental studies, especially Indology, and has published a lot.

In his early years, he studied abroad, fluent in English, German, Sanskrit, Pali, able to read Russian and French, especially Tocharian (an independent language in the Indo-European language family, the most widely distributed language family in the contemporary world), and is one of the few scholars in the world who are proficient in this language.
