In Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and other countries, about 80% of men and women have undergone this surgery.

The practice of circumcision in Africa has been practiced for more than 4,000 years. According to the relevant United Nations information, circumcision is still prevalent in 50 countries around the world, and as many as 130 million women have been circumcised, and an average of about 6,000 girls are still subjected to knife cutting every day. Female circumcision is common in Africa.

In some areas, circumcision is common, while in others, such as Egypt and Kenya, half of all girls are circumcised. In Senegal and Tanzania, 15 per cent of girls are circumcised.

The harm caused by circumcision to women's physical and mental health has aroused great concern in African countries and the international community. Beginning in 1979, African women's organizations, with the help of the World Health Organization, convened special meetings in Katumum, Lusaka and other places, and adopted resolutions to gradually abolish the practice throughout Africa, starting with East and North Africa, where female circumcision is most prevalent. The parliaments of Kenya, Somalia and other countries have also passed decrees to repeal them immediately after fierce debates.

In October 2013, the European Council overwhelmingly adopted a resolution defining male circumcision as "an act that prejudices the physical integrity of young children" and placing it alongside female circumcision.
