The molecular formula C 10 H 8, which has a special odor and is the most abundant component of coal tar, is usually prepared from distilled coal tar and from coke oven gas**, and consists of two fused benzene rings. It is mainly used as a raw material for organic synthesis and as a fumigant (e.g. in sanitary balls).
