There is a problem of water pollution.

What are the root causes of pollution in rivers and lakes? There are three main causes: exogenous pollution, endogenous pollution and loss of ecological functions of water bodies.

The first is exogenous pollution, mainly from industrial wastewater, domestic sewage and initial rainwater.

Wastewater discharged directly or secretly from factories and domestic sewage from cities are directly discharged into natural water bodies through pipe networks, or overflow into natural water bodies when sewage treatment plants are overloaded and their treatment capacity is insufficient, thereby destroying water quality and causing serious river and lake pollution. When it rains, the initial rainwater reaches the ground through the atmosphere, and when it washes the ground, it brings harmful substances such as road pollutants and heavy metals into the pipe network and discharges them into natural water bodies, further aggravating the pollution of rivers and lakes. The exogenous pollution composed of industrial wastewater, domestic sewage and initial rainwater is the root cause of water environmental pollution.

This is followed by endogenous pollution, mainly from river and lake sediment, decaying aquatic flora and fauna, and coastal garbage.

Sediment pollution is when the water body is polluted, some pollutants in the water are stored in the sediment through precipitation or particulate matter adsorption, and re-released under appropriate conditions, becoming a secondary pollution source. In addition, the decay and decomposition process of animals and plants in the water will have a certain impact on the water quality, which may cause hypoxia in the water body, which will lead to pollution. The entry of coastal garbage into water bodies will further increase pollution.

Finally, there is the loss of ecological functions of water bodies. When the exogenous pollution and endogenous pollution are too heavy, the ecological function of the water body is destroyed, the water ecological function is lost, the self-repair and regulation ability is reduced, and the pollution is aggravated, forming a vicious circle.

According to incomplete statistics, at present, more than 90% of the water bodies in cities across the country are polluted to varying degrees (data** in the "River and Lake Pollution Status and Treatment Countermeasures" released by the Water Facilities Management Institute of Zengcheng District, Guangzhou in January 2019).
