In July 1487, at the age of 32, Bartholomew Dias was ordered by the King of Portugal to lead three expedition ships south along the west coast of Africa. Go in search of a route around the southern tip of Africa into the Indian Ocean. The flotilla made a smooth start south along the coast of Africa, and it did not take long for them to reach Vavis Bay in the middle of the southwest African coast.
However, they soon discovered that the coastline was becoming more and more blurred as they continued their voyage south. In order to speed up, Dias ordered the food boat that had delayed the speed of the ship to return to the sea alone.
Just as they were rejoicing in the smooth sailing, the fleet was hit by a great storm, and the roaring waves rushed against the fleet. A terrible storm pushed the ships that had fallen sail south. It took 10 days for the storm to subside.
Based on his previous sailing experience, Dias knew that when traveling south along the African continent, whenever he sailed east, he would inevitably stop at the coast. So he gave the order to turn around and sail eastward!
Dias arrives at the Cape of Good Hope.
The flotilla sailed eastward for several days in a row. However, instead of seeing the expected African coastline, they seem to be getting farther and farther away. Faced with this situation, Dias analyzed it with his rich experience, and he believed that the fleet had probably rounded the southernmost tip of Africa, so the further east it sailed, the farther away from the mainland.
So, he gave the order to turn the bow of the ship and head north!
Sure enough, a few days later they saw the shadow of the land again, and soon arrived at what is now Mossel Bay. At this time, Dias noticed that the coastline was slowly turning northeastward, stretching in the direction of India. At this point, Dias is completely convinced:
The flotilla has rounded the southernmost tip of Africa and has come to the Indian Ocean. As long as you continue to sail eastward, you will surely reach the mysterious east.
Dias wanted to move on, but the crew was tired and asked to return to the ship, and there was little food and supplies left. So, he had to give the order to turn the ship around and return to Portugal.
