The NBA was founded on June 6, 1946. When it was founded, it was called BAA, or Basketball Association of America, and was founded by the owners of 11 ice hockey arenas and gymnasiums to keep their gyms from sitting idle outside of ice hockey games.
The BAA was founded with 11 teams: the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Washington Congress, Chicago Bucks, Cleveland Rebels, Detroit Falcons, Philadelphia Cavaliers, Pittsburgh Irons, Providence Steam, St. Louis Bombers, and Toronto Eskimos. In 1949, the BAA annexed another league (NBL) at the time and renamed it the NBA.
In the 1949-50 season, there were 17 teams in the NBA. In 1976, the NBA annexed the National Basketball Association (ABA), increasing the number of teams to 22. In 1980 the Dallas Mavericks joined the year, the New Orleans Hornets and Miami Heat joined the year, the Orlando Magic and the Minnesota Timberwolves joined the year, two Canadian teams joined the NBA, and the Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies joined the year, bringing the NBA's team to 29.
In 2004, the Bobcats joined 30 teams.
