A few major differences between 99 and 96:

The 99 had a higher horsepower engine (1200 horsepower in the early stage and 1500 horsepower in the later stage), and the 96 engine had only 900 horsepower. The 99 has greater mobility.

The 99 has a larger weight (51 tons), while the 96 has only 39 tons.

The 99 had a higher level of protection, and the thickness of the armor was significantly higher than that of the 96. In addition, the 99g can be attached with reactive armor.

There is also a big difference, but it is not a performance indicator: the cost of 99 is close to 20 million yuan, which is expensive for the PLA!! And 96 is much cheaper.

It seems that 96 is a simplified version of 99... As long as 99 is too expensive, it is impossible to equip troops in large quantities.
