On 15 February, Times Higher Education released its Young University Rankings 2022. The ranking only looks at institutions that are 50 years old or less, i.e. those that have been established since 1972. This year's ranking includes 539 universities from 74 countries and territories, up 13% from 475 in the previous year.
Chinese mainland institutions continued to perform well, with 11 institutions on the list this year, up three from eight in the previous year. Among the top 100 universities, Southern University of Science and Technology ranked 13th, up 13 places from the previous year, while Shenzhen University moved up 26 places to 73rd.
It is worth noting that the Southern University of Science and Technology, which ranks first among mainland universities, is also a new university in the second round of "double first-class" of the Ministry of Education a few days ago, and the selected discipline is mathematics. It was officially established in 2012 in Shenzhen, China, and is positioned as a research university and a national pilot university for comprehensive reform of higher education.

The rest of the universities on the list are: the University of Liverpool in the Western Suburbs (170th), Guangzhou University, Shantou University, Wuhan University of Technology, Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics in the 201-300 range, and Jianghan University, Yangzhou University, Chengdu University and South China University. Among them, Guangzhou University, Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics and Chengdu University are the new mainland universities on the list this year.
The top 10 institutions are mostly from Asia and Europe, with the top five being the Paris Sciences and Sciences University in France, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. City University of Hong Kong dropped from 5th in the previous year to 10th this year.
Australia has the highest number of institutions in the top 200 with 20, followed by the UK with 19 and France with 17.
India and Turkey are the countries with the largest number of participating institutions, with 40 institutions each. The United Kingdom and Iran followed with 37 universities each.

Gong Ke, president of Tianjin University, said, "None of these ranking agencies have asked for data from the university." Professor Wu Zhicheng, a spokesman for Nankai University, told reporters that the university had received many similar calls and faxes, explicitly or implicitly offering "sponsorship" in exchange for a rise in the rankings, but the university refused to do so.
