George Paxinos, who currently works at the Australian Institute of Neuroscience (NERA), discovered a new region of the brain in his mapping work and named it "Endorestiform Nucleus".

This small nucleolus is hidden in the inferior cerebellar peduncle.

Although the function of this area is still unknown, it is located in the lower cerebellum near the junction of the brain and spinal cord. This area combines sensory and motor information to improve human control of balance, posture and fine motor skills.

It is worth mentioning that so far, endorestiform nucleus seems to be unique to humans. Professor Paxinos added:

The present endorestiform nucleus is thought to play an important role in the control of fine motor.

However, Paxinos and his team have not yet studied the brains of chimpanzees (and their recently discovered close relatives of humans). But that's exactly where they want to dig deeper in the coming months.
