The Manchus are a small ethnic group in Xinjiang, and some of their customs are also very interesting. It is said that the Manchus do not kill dogs, do not eat dog meat, do not wear dog skin hats, do not lay dog skin mattresses, and do not harm magpies. Why is that?
It turns out that there are stories of "dog rescue" and "magpie rescue" among the people. Legend has it that the ancestor of the Manchu people Nurhachi was once chased by Li Chengliang, the general soldier of the Ming Dynasty, seeing that he was approaching, Nurhachi hurriedly hid in a pool of reeds, the pursuers were difficult to find, so they set fire to the reeds, and suddenly, the fire spread to the reeds, and the pursuers thought that Nurhachi was burned alive, in fact, Nurhachi was just smoked down, when the fire was about to spread to him, there was a yellow dog ran into the water, dipped in water, rolled on Nurhachi, the fire on his body was extinguished, but the yellow dog was tired and died beside him. Later, when the Ming soldiers came to search, a group of magpies fell on Nurhachi's body, and the Ming soldiers thought that the magpies were pecking at the corpse, and Nurhachi was undoubtedly dead, so they withdrew their troops and returned to the court.
When Nurhachi woke up, he found a magpie on his body and a yellow dog lying beside him, and then he realized that it was the yellow dog and the magpie that saved him.
The stories of "Dog Rescue" and "Magpie Rescue" may not be true, but for the Manchu people who used to hunt for a living, the dog was the left and right arm, and it was the main production tool for hunting for the means of subsistence. When the Manchus went out hunting, they used dogs as guides to track and hunt wild beasts. A good hunting dog can not only trace the news, but also directly catch the wild meat, so the Manchu people are very partial to dogs, and in some places when the Manchu girl is married, there is a custom of taking the dog as a dowry.
The magpie is a bird loved by many peoples, as the saying goes: the magpie calls, the joy comes. Therefore, the Manchu people are also very fond of magpies, and regard magpies as sacred birds, never harm, and erect long poles in their own courtyards to prepare food for magpies to eat.
Therefore, when we visit the Manchu home, we should not wear a dogskin hat or a dogskin coat, so as not to cause them to be unhappy.

The Manchus avoid dog skins and dog meat. This is a very important custom of the Manchu (Jurchen) people, and it is also a common custom of the Tungusic people in the north.
There are three theories about this: one is the theory that the righteous dog saved the Han king, the second is the custom theory derived from the Manchu ancestors, and the third is the totem worship theory.
The Manchus are an industrious, courageous, and intelligent people, and they are also a nation that is good at absorbing foreign cultures and incorporating innovations. In the long-term historical development, the customs and culture rich in national characteristics have been formed, and the customs of the Manchu people are mostly similar to those of the Han nationality, but they have maintained a lot of Manchu characteristics.
