In February 1912, Nie Er was born in Kunming, Yunnan Province. In 1927, he was admitted to Yunnan Provincial First Normal School. In 1928, he joined the Chinese Communist Youth League.
In 1930, he went to Shanghai and participated in the Anti-Imperialist League. At the beginning of 1933, Nie Er was introduced by Tian Han to join the Communist Party of China.
In 1935, Nie Er composed the theme song "March of the Volunteers" for the movie "Children of the Storm", which reflected the great patriotic spirit of the Chinese nation when the nation was in danger, united to resist humiliation, bravely resisted, and indomitable, and inspired the heroic courage of the Chinese people to fight the Japanese invaders to the end. As soon as this work was born, it was sung everywhere in the motherland, playing the strongest voice of the era to save the national crisis.
Evaluation Nie Er has composed dozens of revolutionary songs, and a series of his works have influenced China for decades. His creation has a distinct sense of the times, serious ideology, high national spirit and outstanding artistic creativity, which points out the direction for the development of the Chinese proletarian revolution and sets an example for China's creation.
Because a large number of songs composed by Nie Er reflected the voice of the people, and became a powerful ** and battle cry to inspire the people, educate the people, and strike at the enemy, it aroused the hatred of the reactionary authorities against him and wanted to arrest Nie Er. Nie Er left Shanghai in accordance with the decision of the party organization and went to the Soviet Union via Japan. On July 17, 1935, Nie Er drowned at the age of 23 while swimming at the Kugenuma Beach in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.
