Life is not easy for anyone, and we must have a spirit of perseverance. The most important thing is that we have faith in ourselves. We must believe that we have a natural talent for everything, and that we will accomplish it at any cost.

One spring, I was forced to rest at home for several weeks due to illness. I watched the silkworms raised by my daughters with cocoons, which intrigued me. Looking at these silkworms stubbornly and diligently working, I felt that I was very similar to them.

Like them, I am always patiently focused on a goal, and perhaps because some force is spurring me on—just as a silkworm is spurred to knot its cocoon.

For nearly fifty years, I have devoted myself to the study of science, and research is the study of truth. I have many beautiful and happy memories. As a teenager, I lived alone at the University of Paris.

During that whole period, my husband and I sat intently, as if in a dream, in our humble study, and we found radium there.

In life, I always pursue quiet work and simple family life. In order to achieve this ideal, I have tried my best to maintain a peaceful environment free from personnel distractions and prestige exaggerations.

I am convinced that in science we have an interest in career rather than wealth. When Pierre Curie and I considered whether or not we should benefit financially from our findings, we both felt that it should not be contrary to our notion of pure research. Therefore, we did not apply for a patent for radium, and we abandoned a fortune.

I firmly believe that we are right. It is true that human beings need realistic-seeking people who are well paid for their work. But humanity also needs dreamers – people who are so strongly attracted to their careers that they have no leisure or enthusiasm for material gain.

My only ambition is to do research as a freelance scholar in a free country. I never took this interest for granted, because until I was 24 years old, I lived in occupied and ravaged Poland. I have estimated the price of French freedom.

I was not born a mild-mannered person, and I knew early on that many sensitive people like me, even when reprimanded for the slightest word, would be overly annoyed, and they tried to hide their sensitivity. I have benefited greatly from my husband's gentle and quiet personality. When he died suddenly, I learned to be submissive.

As I get older, the more I appreciate the trivial things in life, such as planting flowers, trees, buildings, and I am a little interested in poetry recitation and stargazing.

I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the world, and the science I love has been adding new perspectives. I believe that science itself has great beauty. A scientist engaged in research is not only a technician, but also a child, in the midst of nature, as if he were fascinated by myths.

This is the main reason why I have been able to work in the laboratory for the rest of my life.
