Santorini, formerly known as Thera, was later changed to Santorini in 1207 in honor of Saintirene.
Santorini is an island ring composed of a group of volcanoes in the Aegean Sea, 200 kilometers southeast of mainland Greece. Santorini is located in the southernmost part of the Cyclades Island Complex, with an area of 96 square kilometers, a coastline of 69 kilometers, and a population of about 14,000 people, mostly Greeks.
Santorini consists of 3 small islands, 2 of which are inhabited and 1 in the middle is a sleeping volcanic island. Historically, there have been many volcanic eruptions, most severely in 1500 B.C., when the center of the island collapsed and the original round island took on the current crescent shape. The capital of Santorini is the city of Fira, located on the western shore of the island.
1,500 years ago, one of the most violent volcanic eruptions in thousands of years occurred here, leaving behind a large crater and hundreds of meters of ash, which indirectly led to the demise of the Minoan civilization in Crete.
Subsequently, the Phoenicians and Dorians came to rule the island. The Greek city of Thera, located 396 meters above sea level, was founded in the 9th century BC by the Dorian colonists, who, according to legend, were led by Sylas ( who lived here until the Byzantine period. According to Herodotus, the Thera sent a number of colonists after a seven-year drought to establish many cities in North Africa, including Cyrene.
Like other Greek territories, Santorini was later divided into Romans, Byzantines, and Franks. In 1579, control of the island fell into the hands of the Ottomans.
