The XXVI Summer Olympic Games were held in Atlanta, United States, from 19 July to 4 August 1996. Atlanta became the host city in 1990 by beating out Athens, Belgrade, Manchester, Melbourne and Toronto in the IOC vote. As 1996 marked the centenary of the Olympic Games, many thought the IOC should award the right to host the Games in Athens, Greece, the birthplace of the Games, but the final vote of the Olympic Committee decided that Atlanta would host the Games, mainly because the stadium facilities in Greece did not meet the desired standards.
Many consider this Olympics to be the least successful of the last few Games. Traffic problems are prominent and over-commercialized, and many people complain about the ubiquity of advertising. In addition, during the July 27 Olympics, 111 people were injured and one person was killed in the Olympic Park in Atlanta.
In his closing speech, IOC President Samaranch did not describe the Games as "the best ever Olympic Games" for the first time.
U.S. track and field athlete Michael Johnson won gold medals in the men's 200m and 400m events, and set a new world record in the men's 200m by second.
Turkey's Naim Suleymanoglu became the first weightlifter to win three Olympic gold medals.
Softball, beach volleyball, mountain biking and women's soccer are the first Olympic sports.
Of the record-breaking 197 participating countries, 97 countries won at least one medal, the most in history.
Five athletes were found to have taken banned drugs.
Hong Kong won a historic first Olympic medal and gold medal in windsurfing with Li Laishan.

London wins 2012 Summer Olympics ***July 6 -- The host city of the 2012 Summer Olympics is announced tonight! After exiting Moscow, New York and Madrid in the just-concluded IOC vote, London faced their old rivals across the English Channel in the final round in Paris. In the end, London defeated Paris to become the host city of the 30th Olympic Games.
In this way, London will take over the banner of the Olympic Movement after the Beijing Olympics. London, the world's most glorious metropolis, has hosted the Olympics twice, in 1908 and 1948, and this time they applied and quickly became the favourite. Paris, the "City of Romance", has hosted two Olympic Games before, in 1900 and 1924.
In recent years, Paris has been actively involved in the Olympic bid, but the first two bids have failed. Among them, in July 2001, they lost to Beijing and missed out on the right to host the 2008 Olympic Games. However, they quickly recovered from the defeat and confidently announced their bid for the 2012 Olympic Games.
Of this year's five candidate cities, they are considered the biggest hits. The other three cities are New York, Madrid, and Moscow. However, New York's public opposition to the city's bid for the Olympics is very high, and the bid plan is not perfect, so it is very difficult to succeed; Madrid has never hosted the Olympics, and although they have the support of the people and the royal family, their ability to protect their safety has been questioned.
As the capital of Russia, historic Moscow is affected by various factors and is not favored. The results of the first three rounds of voting were as expected. In the first round of voting, Moscow received the fewest votes and was the first to be eliminated.
Their representatives will then have the opportunity to vote later. In the second round of voting, New York of the United States received the fewest votes and could not escape the fate of being eliminated. In the third round of voting, no city received more than half of the votes in advance.
Madrid, which was considered a potential "dark horse", received the fewest votes in this round, following in the footsteps of the two cities ahead of them, and was also eliminated. The suspense of the host city elections was left to the final round, with London "dueling" the equally powerful Paris. In this round of voting, the two sides did not embarrass IOC President Rogge to a draw, but rather came out on top.
After an almost suffocating wait, a 13-year-old Chinese-Singaporean girl handed Rogge a letter with results. After thanking the people of Singapore, the host country, the countries that had previously applied and the five candidate countries, Rogge announced loudly to the world: The International Olympic Committee has decided to hand over the hosting rights of the 30th Olympic Games to London!
