More than half of the world's Korean pine resources are distributed here, but since the development of Xiaoxinganling in 1948, after 56 years of logging, the natural Korean pine forest here has been reduced from the original 1.2 million hectares to less than 50,000 hectares, and only about 3 million mature trees remain.

On August 31, 1985, the 15th meeting of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Yichun City, Heilongjiang Province, China, made a decision to name Korean pine as the city tree. On September 1, 2004, Yichun City issued the Mayor's Order No. 1, deciding to completely stop the logging of natural Korean pine forests in Yichun and register the existing Korean pine trees for protection.
