Jiang Menglin Profile:
Jiang Menglin (1886-1964), formerly known as Mengxiong, Zhaoxian, Menglin, was a native of Yuyao, Zhejiang, and a famous educator in modern China.
On January 20, 1886, Jiang Menglin was born in Yuyao, Zhejiang. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1912 with a bachelor's degree in education, and then went to the graduate school of Columbia University in New York to study under John Dewey, where he received a doctorate in philosophy and education. He served as the first Minister of Education of the People's Republic of China, the Secretary-General of the Executive Yuan, and the longest-serving president of Peking University.
In June 1917, Jiang Menglin ended his study abroad career at Columbia University and successfully obtained a doctorate degree with the title of "Research on the Principles of Chinese Education", and became the main successor of the famous educational philosopher John Dewey in China.
In 1949, he went to Taiwan with the Kuomintang regime.
During his tenure as president of Peking University, Jiang Menglin devoted his life to "rectifying discipline and developing mass governance to make up for the shortcomings of the university." In terms of educational ideas, Jiang Menglin believes that the long-term plan of education lies in "taking the quintessence of China and harmonizing the spirit of the modern world with the spirit of the modern world: setting standards and setting problems", with the goal of cultivating "the spirit of science" and "social consciousness".
His main works include autobiographical works "Western Tide", "New Wave", "On Learning", "Research on the Principles of Chinese Education", etc.
On June 19, 1964, Jiang Menglin died of liver cancer in Taipei, Taiwan, at the age of 78.

Chen Pingyuan, a professor at Peking University who has studied the history of Peking University, said: "In the writings of historians, Cai Yuanpei's significance has been infinitely exaggerated, so much so that it has inadvertently suppressed other presidents who have also made great contributions. The most obvious example is Jiang Menglin, Cai Yuanpei's early student. ”
In 1988, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Peking University, a book entitled "The President of Peking University and Chinese Culture" was published, hoping to "commemorate the special status and contribution of Peking University in the history of Chinese culture", but Jiang Menglin was not included in it. In 1998, on the occasion of the centennial celebration of Peking University, the book was revised and published with articles about Jiang Menglin. However, some researchers are still complaining:
Two years ago, when Peking University celebrated, it was rare to see Jiang Menglin's name. ”
Chen Pingyuan also expressed regret: "It's a pity that in a large number of publications about Peking University, President Jiang's position is quite embarrassing......In the history of the university, Jiang Menglin was called a "typical Kuomintang new bureaucrat" and "unpopular at Peking University". ”
Cai Yuanpei once confessed: "In the name of the president of Peking University, I have lived for ten and a half years; In fact, the school has only done things for five and a half years. "During the period when President Cai was not in school, it was often Jiang Menglin who handled administrative affairs on his behalf.
In addition to serving as the director of general affairs for a long time, he also acted as the president three times, so that some people commented at the time: "The president of Peking University in the past five or six years is not so much Cai Yuanpei as Jiang Menglin." ”

As the longest-serving president of Peking University in history, Jiang Menglin devoted most of his life to China's modern higher education and the construction of Peking University. He took the construction of an academic center as the ideal goal of governing Peking University, adhered to the policy of "inclusiveness and freedom of thought" for a long time, and maintained the basic tradition of Peking University, which created several glories of Peking University and the "Southwest Associated University" in the 20-40s of the last century, and had a significant impact at home and abroad.
Jiang Menglin developed the principle of professorship in the school. He drew on the management experience of some universities in the United States, emphasizing the division of labor at various levels and each performing its own duties. He put forward the management policy of "professors governing the school, students seeking education, staff governing affairs, and the principal governing the school".
The academic affairs and affairs of the original faculties were changed to the school secretariat and the academic affairs office, which changed the phenomenon of professors taking charge of various affairs in the past, and enabled professors to concentrate on their studies and teaching. At the same time, he strictly restricted teachers from teaching part-time outside the school, so that professors had enough time to study and accumulate knowledge. In addition, in 1920, Peking University initiated the establishment of the Council (Division of Legislation) and the Executive Council (Department of Administration) in the specific implementation of Jiang Menglin, so that many professors could express their opinions on teaching, academic research and the policy of school reform, and play an active role, so as to better implement the principle of professors governing the university.
From the early 20s to the 30s, Jiang Menglin, together with Cai Yuanpei, Hu Shi, Fu Sinian and others, worked hard to promote the prosperity of Peking University, so that Peking University changed from chaos to governance, from decline to prosperity, and gradually became the center of national academics. Peking University has gathered talents, prospered academically, promoted teaching and research to reach the international advanced level, and some professors' scientific research achievements have been in the leading position in the academic circles at home and abroad, and a large number of high-quality talents have been cultivated year by year.
