World Wetlands Day is celebrated on February 2 every year. On February 2, 1971, representatives from 18 countries convened the "International Conference on Wetlands and Waterfowl Conservation" in Ramsar, a small coastal town in southern Iran, and adopted the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially Waterfowl Habitat, referred to as the "Convention on Wetlands", which officially entered into force on December 21, 1975.
In 1996, the 19th meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention on Wetlands decided to designate 2 February as "World Wetlands Day" every year. Since 1997, countries around the world have held different forms of activities on this day to promote the protection of natural resources and the ecological environment. Wetlands are an important area of environmental protection, with a strong function of regulating groundwater, and are known as the "kidneys of the earth".

World Wetlands Day is known in English
Wetlands International held its sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties in Brisbane, Australia, in March 1996. The General Assembly adopted the Strategic Plan for the period 1997-2002. In October 1996, the Standing Committee adopted a resolution declaring February 2 as World Wetlands Day.
In October 1998, the Standing Committee decided to replace the monogram. The seventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties was held in Costa Rica in May 1999. The Conference decided to compile a set of tools to formally recognize BirdLife International, the World Conservation Union, Wetlands International and the World Nature** as partner organizations of the Convention.
The eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Wetlands will be held in Spain in 2002.
Wetlands are an important area of environmental protection, and different countries and experts have different definitions of wetlands. Chinese scientists define wetlands as perennial or seasonal water accumulation (water depth within 2 meters, water accumulation for more than 4 months) and excessively wet land on land, and the biological populations that grow and inhabit it.
Common natural wetlands include: marshland, peatland, shallow lakes, river beaches, coastal tidal flats and salt marshes.
Wet scattered cultivation has a strong function of regulating groundwater, which can effectively store water and resist flood peaks. It is able to purify sewage and regulate the regional microclimate; Wetlands are also important habitats for aquatic animals, amphibians, birds, and other wildlife. Wetlands, along with forests and oceans, are known as the three major ecosystems in the world, nurturing and enriching global biodiversity"Kidneys of the Earth"。
However, due to the reclamation or reuse of wetlands, the ecological environment has been severely damaged. For example, it will cause the intensification of flood disasters, the obvious trend of aridification, and the sharp decline of biodiversity.
In order to protect wetlands, more than a dozen countries signed an important wetland convention, the Ramsar Convention (Ramsar Convention for short), in Ramsar, Iran, on February 2, 1971. The main role of this convention is to protect wetlands and their biodiversity, especially waterfowl and the environment on which it depends, through joint cooperation among countries around the world.
In October 1996, the Standing Committee of the International Convention on Wetlands decided to designate February 2 as World Wetlands Day. Use this day as a day for institutions, organizations and citizens to take action, big and small, to raise awareness of the value and benefits of wetlands.
The theme for World Wetlands Day 2016 is: "Cultural Diversity and Biodiversity in Wetlands". Its main purpose is to advocate all countries, non-governmental organizations and people of insight to take advantage of all opportunities to carry out various protection and publicity activities, improve the public's understanding of the value and importance of wetlands in protecting and enriching cultural diversity and biodiversity, and then promote the better protection and rational use of wetland resources.
