Shen Kuo (1031-1095), a native of Qiantang County, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, was a politician and scientist in the Northern Song Dynasty.
Shen Kuo was born in the family of eunuchs, and traveled with his father when he was a child. In the eighth year of Jiayou (1063), he was awarded the manager of Yangzhou to join the army. Shenzong participated in the Xining reform of the law, and was heavily valued by Wang An's stone tools, and successively served as the crown prince Zhongyun, the inspection of the Zhongshu Torture Room, the promotion of the Heavenly Prison, the review of the History Museum, and the envoy of the three divisions.
In the third year of Yuanfeng (1080), Shen Kuo went out of Zhiyan Prefecture, and concurrently served as the pacification envoy of the Yanyan Road, stationed at the border to resist the Western Xia, and was later demoted because of the battle of Yongle City. In his later years, he moved to Runzhou (now Zhenjiang, Jiangsu) and lived in seclusion in Mengxi Garden. In the second year of Shaosheng (1095), he died of illness at the age of sixty-five.

He wrote a variety of books in his lifetime, according to the "History of the Song Dynasty: Art and Literature", his works have 22 kinds of 155 volumes, but according to the "Mengxi Bi Tan" and the Song Dynasty bibliography, there are 18 other kinds. At present, only 26 volumes of "Mengxi Bi Tan", 3 volumes of "Supplementary Bi Tan", 1 volume of "Continuation of Bi Tan", 19 volumes of the surviving version of "Changxing Ji" and some of Shen Kuo's medical prescriptions in "Su Shen Liangfang" have been lost, and the others have been lost.
