Immigrate to New Zealand to join New Zealand International and enjoy all the benefits of New Zealand country. Part of what you can enjoy with permanent residency is that you are not a New Zealander, but you will benefit the most from living in New Zealand all the time. And everyone benefits from joining New Zealand International.
What I don't understand is the conflict between your joining New Zealand International and your not giving up the opportunity to return home? I won't say anything if I don't know your specific purpose.

People with green cards enjoy the same treatment as American citizens, except that they do not have the right to vote and be elected. The nationality of the green card holder remains unchanged.

The right of permanent residence is still a little bit different from nationality, and the United States stipulates that if you do not live in the country for 2 years, you will lose your permanent residency, but there is no such problem when you join the nationality!
