Like most NBA players, West excelled in high school and West Virginia University, winning the 1959 National College Basketball Championship (NCAA) before joining the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played for 14 years. He also represented the U.S. national team and won a gold medal at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.
Over the course of his career, West scored 25,192 points, averaging 27 points per game, 7,160 free throws and 6,238 assists.
West was named to the NBA All-Defensive Team four times, to the All-NBA Team 10 times, and to the All-Star Game 14 times. In 1980, he was named to the NBA All-Time Team for the 35th anniversary of the NBA. In 1996, on the 50th anniversary of the NBA, he was named to the list of the 50 best players in NBA history.
A consummate shooter, he averaged points per game in 153 playoff games, including 11 in 1965, and in the 1970 championship game, he hit a late shot from 60 feet away, creating a classic scene in NBA history. However, West won only one NBA championship in 1972. He retired two years later, still holding various positions at the club and later as Lakers coach, making the playoffs three times between 1976 and 1979.
