Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945), American home. Born in Trehot, Indiana. His father was a poor German immigrant.
He received his early education in public schools and later attended Indiana University. Spent most of his life in journalism. He traveled to Chicago, Pittsburgh, New York and other big cities, and observed and understood society extensively and deeply, which accumulated rich materials for future literary creation.
The first ** is "Sister Carrie" (1900), through the story of Carrie, a rural girl who goes to Chicago to make a living and becomes a famous actress, exposing the struggle for survival under the cloak of prosperity in capitalist society, and making a profound description of the society of the opposition between rich and poor in the United States. This ** has long been banned from circulation due to accusations of being "destructive", but some of the giveaways that have been distributed have attracted the attention of many important writers. In 1911, "Lady Jenny" appeared, followed by the first two parts of the "Desire Trilogy", "The Financier" (1912) and "The Giant" (1914), which established Dreiser as a place in American literature.
Genius (1915) is one of Dreiser's most satisfying novels. It indicts the destruction of art by capitalist society through the degeneration of a young painter. "Tragedy in America" (1925), based on a true crime case, is Dreiser's masterpiece.
His artistic characteristics – expansive social scenes, rich plot twists and turns, in-depth and detailed psychological descriptions, contrasting techniques of different situations and unique language – are all reflected in this masterpiece.
In 1944, Dreiser's was awarded an honorary award by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The Fortress (1946) and The Stoga (1947) were published posthumously. Both books reflect Dreiser's interest in the philosophy of religion in his later years.
In 1945, he joined the Communist Party of America. He died on December 28 of the same year.
