Born in November 1977 in Zhangqiu District, Jinan City, Shandong Province, Yan Ning is a structural biologist named Na Yuan, President of the Shenzhen Academy of Medical Sciences, Director of the Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, and a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences. Yan Ning is mainly engaged in the research of important membrane transporters related to diseases, the structure and working mechanism of voltage-gated ion channels, and the molecular mechanism of membrane proteins regulating cholesterol metabolism pathways.

From 1996 to 2000, Yan Ning studied at the Department of Biological Science and Technology of Tsinghua University, and obtained a bachelor's degree from Xubi after graduation. From 2000 to 2004, he studied at the Department of Molecular Biology of Princeton University and obtained a Ph.D. degree after graduation. From 2005 to 2007, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Molecular Biology, Princeton University. From 2007 to 2017, he served as a professor and doctoral supervisor of Tsinghua University. On May 7, 2017, he was appointed as Shirley Tillman Tenured Professorship in the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University.

Major achievements:

Since returning to China in October 2007 to set up a laboratory, Yan Ning has been committed to the study of the structure and function of membrane proteins in structural biology. In 2014, her team unraveled the three-dimensional crystal structure of the human glucose transporter GluT1 for the first time in the world, and in 2015, the ultra-high-resolution structure of Glut3-binding substrates and inhibitors with more conformations was obtained, thus clearly revealing the molecular basis of the basic cellular process of transmembrane transport of glutrose.

She has also made important contributions to the field of ion channel structural biology, elucidating the crystal structure of voltage-gated sodium ion channels, and more recently, using the latest cryo-EM technology to obtain the high-resolution structure of the largest calcium ion channel, RYR1.
