Born on March 30, 1853 in the Dutch countryside of Zundert to a Protestant clergyman's family, Van Gogh spent his early years as a clerk and trading broker, as well as a missionary in the mines, and finally devoted himself to painting. In his early years, he was influenced by traditional Dutch painting and French realism. In 1886, he came to Paris, where he became acquainted with Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painters, and was exposed to the works of Japanese ukiyo-e, which greatly changed his style of painting as he expanded his horizons.
In 1888, he came to Arles, a small town in the south of France, to create "The Suspension Bridge of Arles"; In the same year, he became acquainted with the painter Paul Gauguin, but due to the conflict of their personalities and differences of ideas, the collaboration soon failed. After that, Van Gogh suffered from frequent episodes of madness (some have recorded it as "epilepsy"), but he continued to paint even when he was conscious. In 1889, he created "Starry Night".
In July 1890, Van Gogh shot himself in a delirium at the age of 37.
