On February 9, 2009, the Suizhou Intermediate People's Court heard the case and made a first-instance judgment on the spot, sentencing the defendant Xiong Zhenlin to death for intentional homicide and depriving him of political rights for life. After the verdict was announced, Xiong Zhenlin appealed, requesting that the death sentence be commuted to a suspended death.
On March 3, 2009, the Hubei Provincial High People's Court made a final ruling of "rejecting the appeal and upholding the original judgment" after trial by the Hubei Provincial High Court, and reported it to the Supreme Court for approval.
On 31 March 2009, the Supreme Court issued a criminal decision, approving the final decision of the Provincial High Court and issuing an order for the execution of the death penalty on the same day.
On April 13, 2009, the Suizhou Intermediate People's Court received an order to execute the death sentence.
