China's geographical regions are divided according to the national administrative regions and natural geographical regions.
National administrative division: The People's Republic of China has three administrative regions: provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government, and special administrative regions.
Physical geographical division: China's physical geographical region is divided into five major geographical regions: eastern, central, western, southwest and northeastern, of which the eastern part includes the Yangtze River basin and the Pearl River basin, the central part includes the Yellow River basin, the western part includes the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the southwest includes the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the South China Plain, and the northeast includes the Northeast Plain and the Heilongjiang River Basin.
China's geographical regions can also be divided according to the characteristics of topography, landform, climate, plants, animals, population distribution, etc., including plateaus, hills, plains, basins, rivers, lakes, oceans, deserts and other natural geographical regions, as well as densely populated, sparsely populated, agricultural areas, industrial areas, urban areas, border areas and other human geographical regions. All of the above regions are part of the geographical division of our country, and they are interrelated and blended with each other, forming a unique geographical pattern of our country.

Based on the characteristics of geographical location, physical geography and human geography, China can be divided into four major geographical regions, namely, the northern region, the southern region, the northwest region and the Qinghai-Tibet region.
Among them, the Qinling Mountains and the Huaihe River are the dividing lines between the northern region and the southern region. The Great Khing'an Mountains-Yinshan-Helan Mountains are the dividing line between the northern region and the northwest region.
