Zhou Fucheng, male, born on June 20, 1911, is a native of Li Town, Jiangjin County, Sichuan. He graduated from the Department of Philosophy of National Tsing Hua University and worked as a researcher at Tsinghua University for three years. He has served as an associate professor and professor at Sichuan University, Jinling University, and West China University.
After liberation, he served as a professor at Wuhan University. In 1952, the department was reorganized, and he was transferred from Wuhan University to Peking University until his retirement in 1986. Before his retirement, he served as the vice president of the Chinese Ethics Society.
His teaching and research interests are mainly in Western philosophy and the history of Western ethics.
In 1932, when he was in college, he wrote Kant's Aesthetic Philosophy, which is divided into two parts, one is the relationship between judgment and understanding and reason, and the other is the criticism of aesthetic judgment.
After graduating in 1936, he was transferred to Chengdu and worked as the "Mass Weekly"; He and his friend Mou Zongsan hosted the journal "Ideal and Culture", and successively served as a professor at Sichuan University and Jinling University. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he became a professor at Wuhan University and published the book "Outline of Philosophy".
After the liberation, he re-evaluated the Confucian tradition with colleagues from the History of Chinese Philosophy Group of Peking University, and wrote two books, On Dong Zhongshu's Thought (published by Shanghai People's Publishing House, 1961) and Dai Zhen's Philosophy (published by Hubei People's Publishing House, 1957). It is pointed out that Confucianism has "a distinction between the ruling faction and the opposition faction", and since Dong Zhongshu was "designated as one" by Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, it has covered up the original Confucianism of the people. In terms of ethics, Zhou Fucheng compiled Selected Classics of Western Ethics (Commercial Press, 1964) and Selected Views on Western Humanism and Human Nature (Commercial Press, 1966).

1 "On Dong Zhongshu's Thought" and "Dai Zhen's Philosophy" pointed out that Confucianism has "the distinction between the ruling faction and the opposition faction", since Dong Zhongshu was "designated as one" by Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, covering up the original folk Confucianism.
2. In terms of ethics, he compiled "Selected Classics of Western Ethics" and "Selected Speeches of Western Humanism and Humanity".
3. Editor-in-chief of "Commentary on Western Ethicists", which is based on the chronological order, with the ideas of the selected people representing an era and having a great impact on future generations, and selects famous Western ethicists, so that China's ethics community can have a more in-depth and comprehensive understanding of Western theories. In his research on ethics, Zhou Fucheng was based on the Marxist theory of human nature and practice. He was always concerned with the question of human freedom and emancipation.
Starting from the theory of human nature, it is necessary to pursue the emancipation of individual freedom and happiness based on individualism; Proceeding from the class theory is inevitably based on the pursuit of class emancipation on the basis of socialism. (On Man and the Emancipation of Man, p. 208).
