Founder of Taoism. Because of its original establishment of the five buckets of rice Dao, also known as the Heavenly Master Dao, it is also known as Zhang Tianshi.

The three of them are the well-known three ancestors of Taoism.
The origin, formation and development of Taoism.
From the Eastern Han Dynasty to the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, it was the period when Taoism was formed and established. In the late Eastern Han Dynasty, Huanglao Dao formed an entity, and folk primitive sects such as Taiping Dao and Tianshi Dao were established one after another. After hundreds of years of transformation and development in the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, the classic teachings, practice methods, and scientific precepts of Taoism gradually became complete, and new Taoist schools multiplied, and were recognized by the rulers, evolving into a mature orthodox religion.
From the Sui and Tang dynasties to the Northern Song Dynasty, due to the respect of the ruling class, Taoism flourished and had a great social influence. After the late Tang Dynasty and the Northern Song Dynasty, there were some new changes within Taoism, mainly manifested in the emergence of the idea of the integration of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism and the rise of the Jindan Taoist school, which mainly practiced Neidanshu. In the Southern Song Dynasty, during the Jin and Yuan dynasties, Taoism underwent a change.
In North China, new Taoist schools such as Quanzhen Dao, Taiyi, and Zhendao appeared, and in the south, new Taoist schools such as Jindan Nanzong, Tianxin, Shenxiao, Qingwei, and Jingming appeared, and the early Tianshi Dao, Shangqing School, and Lingbao School also innovated in doctrine and Taoism. Propagating the unity of the three religions and paying attention to the cultivation of Neidan were the main characteristics of Taoism during this period.
In the Ming and Qing dynasties, as China's feudal society entered the late stage, the development of Taoism fell into stagnation and ossification. Modern Chinese Taoism inherited the remnants of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and has been at a low point except for a few periods.

Taoism is based on Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching and other classics, but Taoism in the Warring States period was not yet Taoism. A Taoist priest is a member of the Taoist clergy. It was only after the Han Dynasty that the Order was formed.
The Han and Wei dynasties were the origins of Taoism. As two landmark events for the final formation of Taoism: one is the circulation of the Taiping Sutra, and the other is Zhang Daoling's Five Bucket Rice Dao (Heavenly Master Dao).
During the reign of Emperor Shun of the Eastern Han Dynasty (126-144), the Taiping Qing Lingshu (i.e., the Taiping Sutra, which is believed to have been compiled by Gan Zhongke, a Qi man during the reign of Emperor Cheng of the Han Dynasty) was widely disseminated. When he arrived at Emperor Ling of the Han Dynasty, Zhang Jiao preached in the "Taiping Qing Lingshu", called Taiping Dao, and called himself a great sage and good teacher, and his followers were all over the world, which was already quite influential. Later, the Yellow Turban Uprising failed, and Taiping Road became increasingly declining.
When the same was Emperor Shun of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Zhang Daoling learned the Tao in Heming Mountain, Shu County, recruited disciples to preach, and the believers came out of five buckets of rice, so it was called five buckets of rice. His son Zhang Heng and his grandson Zhang Lu (Zhang Lu, Marquis of Langzhong, the separatist regime during the Three Kingdoms period) maintained the Hanzhong for many years, and later cooperated with the supreme ruling authority, so that the influence of Wudou Midao spread from the southwest corner to the sea, and then developed into the Taoist authentic Tianshi Dao.
Tang Gaozu Li Yuan recognized Laozi Li Er as his ancestor, Song Zhenzong and Song Huizong also believed in Taoism, and Song Huizong called himself "the leader of the Taoist Emperor", so Taoism was highly respected and became the state religion. At this time, factions such as Maoshan and Gesoap appeared, and the Heavenly Master Dao also re-emerged. Since the Han and Jin dynasties, the Taoist Danding faction, due to the vigorous advocacy of Han Zhongli, Lu Dongbin and others, the study of Inner Dan began to appear in the world.
Taoism flourished during the Tang and Song dynasties.
Zhang Daoling, the authentic Taoist Heavenly Master and the founder of Taoism, is revered as the first generation of Heavenly Masters.
