"Pinching flowers and smiling" has two meanings:

What the Buddha preached was actually a state of mind that was peaceful, tranquil, leisurely, and wonderful.

This state of mind is pure and untainted, indifferent and open-minded, desireless, greedless, unrestrained, calm, formless, transcendent, unshakable, and eternal in the world, which is the highest state of "unphased" and "nirvana", which can only be perceived and comprehended, and cannot be expressed in words. And Ka Ye's slight smile, it was precisely because he realized this realm that the Buddha passed on the mantle to him.

"Pinching flowers and smiling" means

"Laughing" and "laughing" are what the Buddha is teaching, what is he teaching, that is, the "Buddha nature" that all living beings have, the one that the six ancestors said "do not think about good and do not think about evil". What is "Buddha nature", Buddha nature is the most fundamental "performance" of the existence of each and every living being, and it exists on the basis of birth, old age, sickness and death, and the cycle of karma.

The Buddha nature is "a wonderful vacuum, a wonderful vacuum", but we are confused in our lives and do not know it. Buddhism is to cultivate rather than seek, what to cultivate, choose the Dharma ("raft") that suits you, practice oneness, break through delusion and realize the truth, and then return to the truth, self-denial and attachment, and finally return to the basics. Without a trace of concern, without the slightest attachment, without any greed and hatred, it is really like using it to the present, to get out of the six realms and to be at ease, to travel the universe without restraint, is to cultivate this.

The Buddha plucked the flowers, and the leaves smiled. That is, the Buddha conveyed a profound truth that he himself realized in the form of a flower, which others did not understand, and only the Buddha understood it.

So Kasaba took over the baton of truth passed on by the Buddha and carried it forward, and later spread eastward to China, to Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and the vast regions of Southeast Asia, and the blessings reached to you and me.

However, for us laypeople, these public cases are just some interesting celebrity anecdotes, and most of the deep meaning in them is not very clear. Today we are going to talk about one of the oldest public cases in the Zen world - "Smile with Flowers". The full name of "Smile of Flowers" is "Buddha Smile of Flowers, Smile of Ka Ye", which not only hides the history of the origin of Zen Buddhism, but also has an inextricable connection with the essence of Zen Buddhism and the way of preaching.
