In August 1941, the North China Front of the Japanese army invading China mobilized more than 70,000 troops to carry out a devastating sweep of the Beiyue and Pingxi base areas under the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei border region. On 25 September, the Japanese puppet army of about 3,500 men laid siege to the Langya Mountain area southwest of Yixian County in an attempt to annihilate the Eighth Route Army and local party and government organs in the area.
