Taoism is one of the major religions in China. It was formed in the Eastern Han Dynasty and flourished in the Northern and Southern Dynasties.

Taoists respect one of the founders, Zhang Daoling, as the Heavenly Master, so it is also called "the Tao of the Heavenly Master".

Later, it divided into many factions. Taoism regards Lao Tzu as the ancestor and respectfully calls him "Taishang Laojun".

Because the "Tao" is the highest belief, it is believed that the "Tao" is the origin of all things in the universe, hence the name. The "Five Buckets of Rice Dao" founded by Zhang Daoling in the Eastern Han Dynasty was the beginning of the stereotyping of Taoism. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, religious forms were gradually completed.

Worship Lao Dan as the ancestor, and be honored as "Taishang Laojun". The Tao Te Ching (i.e., Lao Tzu), the Zhengyi Jing and the Taiping Cave Jing are the main classics. The Jade Emperor God is the supreme god.

Let people detach themselves from reality and become immortals.

The first national Taoist temple of Taoism was located in the Shangqing Palace in Luoyang.

    Categories: Social Livelihood >> Religion.

Problem description: The origin of Taoism.

    Analysis: The origin of Taoism.

There are three major religions in China: Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, among which only Taoism was born and raised, which originated in the middle of the Eastern Han Dynasty.

Where there is suffering, religion is apt to arise. After the middle of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the rule became increasingly corrupt and dark, social turmoil, natural disasters were frequent, and the people were struggling to make a living. Taoism was born under these social and historical conditions.

The emergence of Taoism is closely related to the origin of its ideas and arts, mainly in the following aspects:

1.Immortal thought and immortal magic. The immortal monks who advocated immortality appeared in the Yanqi area, and explained the magic with the Five Elements Yin and Yang Theory of Zou Yan of Qi during the Warring States Period, thus forming the so-called immortal family, that is, Fang Xiandao.

2.Ancient religious thought and witchcraft. In ancient society, people worshipped the sun, moon and stars, rivers, seas, mountains and ancestors, regarded them as gods, and gradually formed a system of gods and spirits of heaven, earth and ghosts, and Taoism regarded many of these gods as part of Taoist gods.

During the Yin Shang period, people believed that witches could resolve doubts and determine good fortune, sorcerers could communicate with ghosts and gods, and rely on witchcraft to pray for people to avoid disasters. Taoism absorbed and inherited this witchcraft.

3.Huang Lao thought. In legend, the Yellow Emperor and Lao Tzu were the founders of Taoism.

Huang Lao's thought contains many elements of mysticism. Many immortal alchemists combined Huang Lao's learning with immortal alchemy. In the Eastern Han Dynasty, they further mystified the Yellow Emperor and Lao Tzu, and then shifted from emphasizing the Yellow Emperor to revering the mythical Lao Tzu, and gradually formed the Huang Lao Dao that worshiped Lao Tzu as a god, and gradually merged with Fang Xian Dao, which was the predecessor of early Taoism.

4.Secular legends. With the development of Taoism, the gods and goddesses in folklore have been integrated into Taoism. For example, the "Eight Immortals", such as the King of Hades and the Eighteen Layers of Hell, the Jade Emperor, etc., so Taoism is completely the secular religion of the Chinese nation.

5.Dimension Theology. It is a religious prophecy; Wei is relative to the Confucian classics, that is, the view of the picture combined with Zou Yan's Yin and Yang Five Elements Thought to interpret the Confucian classics, deduce the disaster and the auspicious, this landscape was initiated by the Western Han Dynasty Confucian scholar Dong Zhongshu, and then formed the study of Weizhi, resulting in the religious of the Confucian classics.

From the end of the Western Han Dynasty to the beginning of the Eastern Han Dynasty, due to the advocacy of the rulers, the study of Weizhi prevailed, and Confucianism and Fangshi gradually merged, resulting in a very strong religious atmosphere, which greatly promoted the formation and emergence of Taoism.
